Exercise in the comfort of your own pool

Water exercise is a growing trend among orthopedic patients.

Water therapy increases your joint flexibility and strength without normal weight bearing stress.

  • When in water up to your waist, joints only feel 50% of your total weight

  • When in water up to your neck, only 10% of your total weight.

Appropriate exercise programs allow your joints and muscles to maintain and restore strength. This in turn can improve your range of motion of these joints. The water resistance helps strengthen your heart, lungs and blood flow. Water is a forgiving medium that soothes your joints and decreases the gravity pull. You feel wonderful in the water. You do things in the water that you cannot do on land.

Aquatic Exercise has been a life saver for me. As a registered nurse I am on my feet a lot and depend on my legs. After my car accident in 2001, I did not know what I was going to do. Then I found the water. The increase in flexibility and stretching you can do in the water makes all the difference. It helps to keep your pain level at a more tolerable level and keeps you limber. Its a healthy addiction. You feel great in the water and can move. Something you may not be able to do gracefully on land. I hope to see you soon -- next to me in a pool!

Aquatic exercise has been a great lifesaver for me. By going at least two to three times a week, I have better movement of all my joints. I have osteoarthritis from head to toe. My back and knees are the worst, but by doing aquatic exercise, I have better mobility.

As for the aqua therapy -- since my orthopedist advised me to get into it about four years ago, I have found it to be an excellent form of exercise -- no impact, which is important for me, and at the same time a good workout which not only helps relax the joints but also makes me feel better about not being able to participate in other forms of exercise -- tennis, for example.

Aquatic exercise has helped me regain flexibility in my arthritic knee while decreasing my pain level.  Many thanks to the super-wonderful instructors!
